10 Habits to Get High Scores in Exams

At the end of every test you might just be wondering, questioning yourself why you couldn't improve your grades from your previous test. Whereas there are those in your class who just keep excelling, improving their scores test by test. You might start doubting yourself, your skills and abilities. However, the magic lies somewhere else. There is a method to scoring consistently high in exams. One just needs to do a few things right over a period of time to start scoring at par with the best students in the class.

Here are these basic things that every high scorer follows as a routine, but probably you weren’t introduced to till now:

1. Have a study plan:

Top students never fail to make a detailed and long term study plan which closely follows whatever is being taught in the class. Such a plan forces one to study consistently over a period of time and in keeping pace with teachings in the class. Some students study regimen, on the other hand, has spikes only when they near exam dates, an approach, which produces disastrous results.

2. Attend classes regularly:

You might be thinking why attend classes and would rather sit at home and study more. But, attending classes is more effective because it’s always interactive and when you listen to someone explains it’s easier to grasp and you’ll remember for a longer period.

3. Preparing your own notes:

Most of the top students always try and make their own notes. A note is basically one putting down in black and white what one understood from a teaching session or by reading something. Making a mind map of the flow of a concept and then writing it down in one’s own language helps in cementing understanding and also triggering red flags if one has not understood something completely.

4. Ask questions:

You’ll always learn better when you engage and exchange ideas.Rather than just alone and studying hours together,ask others questions and engage in solving problems.This will help you learn better in a shorter period of time in a more effective way.

5. Focus on Learning, Not Grades

Studying primarily to get good grades are generally counter-productive. One should be focused on learning and understanding the concepts thoroughly. You have clearly learnt a concept, good grades will automatically follow.

6. Focus on one thing at a time:

When you are studying, that should be the only thing in your head. Do not try multi-tasking .Try not to think of other subjects or activities while studying. Try and concentrate .If not you are just going to waste time trying to study and wouldn't be able to do it right too. Always remember FOCUS is the key to success.

7. Master time management:

Time management skills can help you take control over your workload and help you achieve more. Prepare a study planner by yourself. Write down what is important, make a time table and prepare schedules for a week ahead. This will make a lot of difference as you’ll cut down the time you waste.

8. Test yourself regularly:

Instead of studying all the time, test yourself once in a while. This will help you to assess your level of understanding of the topics. Take puzzles, timed quizzes or write essays. All this will help your brain not to cramp up and it’ll take out your stress too.

9. Take study breaks:

Did you know that the more time you spend trying to study, the lesser will be your ability to absorb knowledge? Make sure to take breaks from time to time while studying. Taking breaks doesn't mean that you distract yourself completely instead take short walks, do yoga or eat healthy. This will help you concentrate better also.

10. Keep Healthy Habits:

Finally, A healthy person will score higher than a sick one. So inculcate healthy habits, like having healthy food at the right time and with right intervals, exercise regularly and have adequate sleep as mandated by your age.
