How We Get Hiccups and How to Control It
Most of us experience hiccups in our lifetime. While scientists know how these involuntarily contractions occur, but they also do not have any answer as to why hiccups occur.
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm – a dome-shaped muscle separating the chest from the abdomen – suddenly contracts. At the same time, your voice box contracts, too, causing that jump in your chest and producing that annoying hiccup sound. The medical term for hiccups is known as “singultus.” There are no obvious triggers to getting hiccups, but alcohol, fizzy drinks, smoking, overeating etc have odten been found to trigger it.
For the most part, hiccups are totally normal and not cause for concern. However, “persistent hiccups lasting more than 48 hours may necessitate a thorough medical evaluation. Although rare, frequent hiccups like this could be caused by a serious cardiovascular, neurologic, or gastrointestinal disorder. At the same time, your voice box contracts, too, causing that jump in your chest and producing that annoying hiccup sound.
CURE FOR HICCUPS
As for scaring the hiccups away, there’s no medical evidence to support that actually works. These are some of the the remedies people use to get rid of hiccups. However, there is no scientific reason as to why these will work and most of these are based on anecdotal evidence. But, when you are having hiccups, then there is no harm tryuingout a few of these, hoping one of these will work ..or the hiccups itself goes away by the time you have finshed trying out a few methods:
Sipping cold water,
Gargling with water,
Holding your breath for a minute
Have someone frighten (or better, surprise) you
Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of the tongue.
The bottomline is there is no need to stress over hiccups and more often then not they will dissipate in no time.
